This was the first goal I came up with for my 25 by 25 and one that I had been looking to accomplish for about four years. As a former card-carrying hater of running, I had always sought out exercise via team sports and aerobic dance DVDs (or honestly just didn't exercise at all.) But at some point during my junior year of college, I decided I should start running and that I wanted to run a 5K. Enter the Couch-to-5K program, perfect for someone like me who hadn't run over a mile in years, and thus began a long string of starts and stops and falling off the wagon. But in the beginning, it became contagious and four of my roommates joined me in my quest - we had our eyes on a 5K at the end of the summer and we planned to do it together. A scheduling conflict thwarted our plans and then school started again and pretty soon it was winter in Michigan. The next two summers passed by with similar results and while I did start to learn to enjoy running (especially in our lovely tree-lined neighborhood), I still hadn't run a 5K.
Then this past July, the perfect opportunity arose. The Color Run was coming to Ann Arbor and some friends of mine had already signed up. It was unique, fun, non-competitive, and I had someone to run with!
It was a great introduction to 5Ks and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a first time run (just keep your mouth closed when going through the color stations!). I'd like to get back into the groove when it warms up and sign up for a different run next summer.
